Description

The Japanese art of Sashiko hails from norther Japan. Handed down from mother to daughter it was originally used to strengthen, recycle and reinforce working clothes before becoming a decorative technique in its own right. The complex patterns are based entirely on running stitch.

This workshop will introduce you to the tools and methods of sashiko. All basic equipment and materials will be provided but if you have a sewing kit and measuring tools please bring them with you.

The workshop will be based around yokogushi – running stitch worked in horizontal rows. The patterns arise from the different way these rows are sequenced.

This workshop offers you the opportunity to explore the first steps of sashiko for yourself. By the end of the day I hope you will be inspired by the wonderful art form that is sashiko. You will have experimental pieces that can form a sampler and a sashiko coaster as a souvenir of your day.

Fresh coffee, teas and homemade cakes provided. Please bring your own lunch.
